Hermes - Leather Goods and Perfumes

Hermes is a Paris based fashion, perfume, and leather goods company. Thierry Hermes founded the company in 1837; originally as a manufacturer of saddles, riding boots, and bridles, catering to the carriage trade of the time. Over the years, the company’s catalog grew to include its signature silk scarf, luggage and couture, fragrances, glass wear and tableware, and ready-to-wear lines.

Since its inception as a leather goods shop in Paris, the company had been offering products of the highest quality. In 1855 the company won the first prize for businesses in its class at the Paris Exposition. Their well-designed and finely wrought leather riding items earned them not only the highest accolades, but also a large and loyal following.

When the carriage and horse riding industry began to wane in favor of automobiles, Hermes adapted its expertise at leather working to the creation of leather wallets, bags, luggage, and other accessories. These accessories were generally for sports such as golf and polo, leading to Hermes’ line of couture sportswear. In fact in the 1920’s, the brand made fashion news by designing for the Prince of Wales a zippered leather golfing jacket. (At the time the zipper was actually a new invention.)

The company continued to expand well into the 20th century, continually adding more items to their lineup. Their perfumery started in 1951, and over the decades since then Hermes has created such scents as Terre D’Hermes, Hiris, Rouge Hermes, and Un Jardin sur le Nil.

By the 1980s their lineup was truly immense, with clothing and accessories in different luxurious materials and styles, as well as date books and teapots. Since the company never gave out licenses, they are able to monitor closely the quality of each and every one of their items.

Through the years the company has maintained a mien of conservative luxury, with many items still bearing equestrian motifs, designating the company’s historic origins. But to the fashion industry’s surprise, at the turn of the century, the company hired on a few of the more radical designers of the day - who fortunately proved their worth by living up to the Hermes name.

would you rather prefer a Mesh jacket or leather jacket while riding a motorcycle?

I'm going to have to be honest here. Both jacket styles have their merrits. Personally, I like the mesh jacket, but that's only because I know what kind of riding I'm going to do. I also live in a rather warm area- where the sun is just cooking. I like to be safe, but I also want to stay comfortable, especially when the bike starts to heat up when you are riding in the city.
Mesh jackets are also pretty safe and more reasonable priced. I recommend it.

Leather jackets are obviously the cream of the crop, but are you just paying to have the best or are you paying to suit your needs? Leather jackets are safer, but they are also very hot and heavy. Make an educated decision. That's all I can say. You are going to have an intimate relationship with your jacket, so make this decision wisely. What are your needs?
